Dr. Laura Gambino

In March 2018 NHTI’s Learning Outcomes and Assessment Team [LOAT] submitted a proposal to the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment [NILOA] which resulted in the opportunity for us to work with Dr. Laura Gambino (left), a NILOA assessment and outcomes coach. To contextualize Dr. Gambino’s expertise with NHTI needs LOAT organized a Colloquium on Learning Outcomes: A Professional Development session for Department Chairs, facilitated by Dr. Laura Gambino. This colloquium was held on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at NHTI’s campus, and was fully sponsored by the NILOA and Lumina Foundation.

NHTI’s Learning Outcomes and Assessment Team Chair, Dr. Liaquat Khan, opened the Colloquium with an overview of the day’s, morning and afternoon, sessions which helped to frame the activities into context of where we are as an institution. His introduction of Dr. Gambino and her accomplishments was most respectful of her work in the field.

Dr. Gambino’s presentations and workshop on Learning Outcomes provided the attendees with a comprehensive overview on the topic, with time for department chairs to revisit, revise, and in some cases develop, well-written learning outcomes. This was appreciated by all who attended. Notably, Dr. Gambino offered numerous thoughtful recommendations and insights to guide our work moving forward.

NHTI’s LOAT members appreciate support from the NILOA, LUMINA Foundation, and NHTI in facilitating this colloquium.

CONCORD — The New Hampshire Nurses Association (NHNA) has appointed NHTI Nursing Department Head Mary Jean Byer, MS, RN, to serve on the newly-formed Commission to Review and Evaluate Workforce and Job Training in New Hampshire.

The commission was established by the legislature on July 2, 2018, “to review and evaluate all government funded workforce and job training programs in New Hampshire to ensure that they are effective, not duplicative, and that they are contributing to the needs of the workforce and the labor market.”  NHNA appoints one member of the 16 member commission.

Mary Jean Byer has been with NHTI for the past 32 years, initially as adjunct and then full-time nursing faculty, later as Curriculum Chair, and presently as Department Head.  She previously served on Senator Woodburn’s Commission to study the shortage of nurses and other skilled healthcare workers for home health care services and post-acute care services.  Byer has also served as a member of the Nursing Advisory Board at Franklin Pierce University and Plymouth State University.

A student examines a patient in NHTI's dental clinic

CONCORD — At its August 2, 2018 meeting, the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) renewed the accreditation of NHTI’s Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs, granting both the status of “approval without reporting requirements.”

“Approval without reporting requirements” is the highest level of accreditation granted by the committee, indicating that both programs “achieve or exceed the basic requirements for accreditation,” and that no deficiencies or weaknesses were found in either program.  CODA accreditation is based on a comprehensive self-study conducted by the institution under review, followed by a site visit conducted by a team of Commission-appointed peers to assess a program's compliance with CODA’s Accreditation Standards and with its own stated goals and objectives. The site visit verifies and supplements the information contained in the self-study document completed by the institution.

As a result of this process, the NHTI dental programs’ accreditation has been renewed through 2025, when a new self-study and site visit will be required.

Washington Monthly Best DA Program Seal

CONCORD — Washington Monthly magazine, known for its annual College Rankings first published in 2006, has ranked NHTI’s Dental Assisting Professional Certificate program seventh in the nation in its newly-released study, “America’s Best and Worst Colleges for Vocational Certificates.”

The magazine’s 2018 College Rankings include its first effort – and the first such effort anywhere, it claims – to rank certificate programs as opposed to degree programs.  Using data from the U.S. Department of Education’s “gainful employment” database, the Monthly looked at the twelve most commonly-offered certificates.  It compared the median earnings of graduates of the schools offering these certificates, three years after graduation.

NHTI’s Dental Assisting program ranked seventh in the nation among schools whose graduates had the highest median incomes.  NHTI was the only New England school to appear in the Top 10.

The Dental Assisting program at NHTI is the only such program in New Hampshire accredited by CODA, the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.  Both NHTI’s Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs recently had their CODA accreditation renewed through 2025, following highly-successful reviews by the committee.

Dr. Cathryn Addy

Concord, NH -  The board of trustees of the Community College System of NH (CCSNH) has appointed Dr. Cathryn Addy interim president of NHTI, Concord’s Community College.  The appointment is for the duration of the academic year, September 10, 2018 to May of 2019 during which time the system will conduct a search for a successor to the presidency.

“I am pleased to bring forward the recommendation of Dr. Addy,” said Dr. Ross Gittell, the Chancellor of CCSNH.  “She comes with a very strong record of college leadership and campus and community collaboration. I believe her skills will serve the college well during this time as NHTI looks to the next chapter in its strong history of providing exceptional educational and professional opportunities for NH residents and service to greater Concord community.”

Dr. Addy is President Emeritus of Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT. She served Tunxis as its president from 1993 until her retirement in July of 2017. While at Tunxis, she led the college in doubling enrollment and oversaw development of a master plan that resulted in the addition of classroom and library facilities and the renovation of existing space deigned to be more student-centered.

Prior to becoming President of Tunxis, Dr. Addy served as the President of Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, MA, as the academic dean at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, as founding campus director of the North Campus of Williamsport Area Community College in Pennsylvania, as Dean of Student Services and counselor at Central Wyoming College in Riverton, Wyoming, and as an English professor at Auburn Community College in Auburn, New York.

Dr. Addy has been involved in numerous community activities, served on a wide variety of boards for non-profit organizations, and has been recognized for her leadership at the local and state levels. She has written articles published by professional publications and newspapers, and a book, The President’s Journey, which has been used as a resource to prepare community college presidents.  At Tunxis she also taught Humanities courses, taught Composition and Sociology at a state youth correctional facility, and spent time each week in the Tunxis Academic Support Center tutoring students.

Dr. Addy, originally from Wichita, Kansas, earned her B.A. degree in English from Kansas State University, her M.A. in English from SUNY- Oswego, and her Ph.D. in Community College Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin.

“I am honored to have been selected for this post,” said Dr. Addy.  “NHTI has a long history of educational excellence and transforming lives.  As rich as its history is, NHTI has an even greater role to play in the dynamic New Hampshire economy of the present and future. As interim president over the course of the upcoming year, I will be committed to the ongoing success of this institution and its students, and look forward to working with a very talented and dedicated faculty and staff.”

Jeremy Hitchcock, chairman of the CCSNH board of trustees which oversees all seven of NH’s community colleges, said, “Dr. Cathryn Addy brings decades of experience in community college leadership and a strong understanding of issues important to students, faculty, staff and taxpayers as institutions evolve and adapt to changing needs and opportunities.  We look forward to working with her and to her contributions as interim president.”

Over 250 Attend Sold-Out Mindfulness in Society Conference at NHTI

Concord, NH – Leading figures in mindfulness, emotional intelligence, meditation, and mindful communication joined forces in Concord on Saturday, September 8 for a one-day Mindfulness in Society Conference. The sold-out event was tailored around the curriculum of the new Mindful Communication Certificate program at NHTI, Concord’s Community College and featured presentations and workshops from meditation expert Sharon Salzberg, change agent Charlie Hartwell, mindfulness teacher Margaret Fletcher and Richard Brady, co-founder of the Mindfulness in Education Network.

The day-long conference was the brainchild of Professor Dan Huston, who has spearheaded the mindfulness work being done at NHTI for over twenty years. Huston brought together leading experts in the field to discuss how practicing mindfulness can reduce hate, resentment, and misunderstanding while increasing compassion, understanding and cooperation – important topics in professional development, education, well-being, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal communication.

“The original goal for this conference was to bring some mindfulness 'powerhouses' to NHTI to celebrate the launch of our brand new Mindful Communication Certificate,” said Huston, professor of communication and writing at NHTI. “The fact that we sold out a full month ahead of time with a wait list is a testament to the incredible impact this relatively new field of study has on so many. And I’m deeply grateful that these amazing presenters took time out of their busy lives to support the important work we are doing here at NHTI.”

The mindfulness program featured workshops by the presenters as well as a panel discussion and question-and-answer session.

"It was a deep delight to be right in our own backyard and see so many friends gather together in the spirit of furthering mindfulness in the world,” said presenter Margaret Fletcher, mindfulness teacher of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. “This new field of study has a true gem in the initiative Dan leads at NHTI, and his slow-growth approach over the last twenty years is a wonderful teaching tool for those who are interested in contributing to the field in the years to come.”

The Mindfulness in Society Conference was presented by NHTI in partnership with Tufts Health Freedom Plan and Yoga4Classrooms.

For more information about mindful communication or NHTI’s new certificate program, please contact Dan Huston at dhuston@ccsnh.edu.

NHTI Makes Campus Pride Index

Richard Nowlin

CONCORD — NHTI, Concord’s Community College, has recently been included on the Campus Pride Index, a national listing of LGBTQ-friendly colleges and universities.  NHTI is the first community college in the state to receive this honor, joining several 4-year schools including Plymouth State, Keene State, Dartmouth and SNHU.

Founded in 2007, the Campus Pride Index serves as the premier LGBTQ national benchmarking tool for higher education. A listing on the Campus Pride Index shows that a school has “come out” as an institution that seeks to improve the academic experience for LGBTQ students. The index is updated every May so that schools may “up their game” and strive for a higher rating over time.  NHTI currently has a score of 3 out of 5 overall, with sub-scores of 5 out of 5 in Residence Life and Campus Safety.

NHTI’s inclusion on the index is largely the work of the campus Alliance Club and its current president, Information Technology student Richard Nowlin.  “Mostly it was just a matter of trying to get the right people into a room to answer a questionnaire,” he says.  “I kept thinking, we have a strong club and this is a very open campus … we should be listed!”

But getting on the index is only the first step.  “The bigger picture,” says Nowlin, “is how can we improve our scores?  We’re at 3 out of 5 now, but I think we have the potential to get to 3½ or even four by the end of the year.”  Initiatives that could help boost the school’s score might include:

  • giving NHTI applicants the opportunity to self-identify by gender and sexuality;
  • starting an LGBTQ alumni association;
  • expanding NHTI’s academic offerings in the fields of gender and diversity studies.

“There’s a lot of things I’d like to do,” says Nowlin.  “I’m in a position where I can get things moving, with the overall goal of making NHTI a safe home for people who are LGBTQ.”

NHTI launches new computed tomography certificate

Katherine Stockton, CT, NHTI '07

Concord – NHTI, Concord’s Community College has launched a new certificate program in Computed Tomography, a medical imaging technology commonly known as a CT or CAT Scan.

The only certificate program of its type in New Hampshire, it is designed for professionals already certified in radiography, radiation therapy or nuclear medicine technology to add diagnostic medical applications of CT imaging to their skill set. Students can complete the 19-credit program within a year, and graduates are eligible to sit for the CT certification examination conducted by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

“We are constantly looking for ways to add value to our curriculum and enhance the skills of our students across medical imaging disciplines,” said Michelle Wade, program coordinator for NHTI’s Computed Tomography (CT) Certificate program. “With an aging patient population, the large number of radiologic technologists reaching retirement age and the growing number of CT procedures performed each year, our graduates are in an excellent position to advance their career while providing much-needed care to people in their community.”

Diagnostic medical imaging is a growing field. Jobs for radiologic technologists are projected to grow 12 percent in the U.S. from 2016 to 2026, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook. Continuing education is crucial as technology improves, practical applications and clinical benefits increase. Technologists who complete NHTI’s new CT Certificate program will be highly skilled professionals prepared to work in hospitals, clinics, labs and outpatient centers. Graduates may also find employment as managers, supervisors, and manufacturer sales and applications representatives.

The Computed Tomography Certificate program integrates scientific concepts and working skills through intensive clinical experience and classroom study. After the first (summer) semester, students will spend two days a week at one of many clinical sites across New Hampshire and New England that partner with NHTI.

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists defines computed tomography technologists as highly skilled professionals who use a rotating x-ray unit to obtain "slices" of anatomy at different levels within the body. A computer then stacks and assembles the individual slices, creating a diagnostic image. With CT technology, physicians can view the inside of organs - a feat not possible with general radiography.

To learn more about the new program or to enroll, contact CT Certificate Program Coordinator Michelle Wade at mwade@ccsnh.edu or (603) 271-6484 x4109.

CONCORD — NHTI’s dental hygiene students need your help!  The students are required to take a clinical board exam to obtain licensure, and are in desperate need of volunteer patients for this exam.

The dental hygiene students will hold an open clinic on Monday, March 4, 2019 from 5-8pm, for screenings to determine if volunteers meet the criteria to qualify as board patients.  All screenings and any necessary x-rays will be free of charge, and x-rays will be forwarded to the patient’s dentist on request.  Free toothbrushes and toothpaste will be given to all volunteers.  You may call the dental clinic to register for this screening at (603) 230-4023.

The students will take their clinical boards on Wednesday, April 24, 2019.  Patients must be available to sit for the exam either from 7am - 12pm, or from 12-5pm.  Both the screening clinic and the board exams will be held at the Dental Hygiene Clinic in MacRury Hall on NHTI’s Concord campus.

For more details, please visit nhti.edu/dental-clinic.  Your help is needed and very much appreciated.  Thank you for your consideration.

NHTI Launches Three New Certificates in Human Services and Addiction Counseling

Concord, NH – NHTI, Concord’s Community College has launched three new certificate programs that provide key skills for those interested in pursuing careers in human services or addiction counseling. The Human Services Certificate, Advanced Human Services Certificate and the Substance Use Disorder Treatment (SUD Tx) Certificate each consist of six courses and 19 credits which students can complete in two semesters. Students can apply now for the fall semester.

The Human Service Certificate prepares graduates for entry-level employment in human services professions. Students will gain knowledge of human services delivery systems, case management techniques, ethics and group facilitation skills. This program includes an understanding of the diverse populations which graduates will serve and the communication skills to be successful, including conflict resolution working with diverse populations, and using principles of equity, justice and inclusion.

The Advanced Human Service Certificate provides individuals an opportunity to further explore the human services field. Students will focus their coursework on the specific sector of the helping professions which interests them, such as mental health, gerontology and substance use disorder treatment. The Advanced Human Service Certificate includes an on-site “practicum” requirement of 125 hours over the 15-week semester. Students typically spend 8-10 hours per week at a workplace under a site supervisor, and attend a weekly seminar on campus with other practicum students.

The Substance Use Disorder Treatment (SUD Tx) Certificate prepares graduates for entry-level employment in the field of substance use treatment, a profession which urgently needs qualified professionals. This program will help students develop a strong foundation for a lifetime of engaged employment helping those dealing with issues related to substance misuse.

“There are many career opportunities for students who earn one of these certificates,” said Mike O'Bryant, professor and department chair of the human service and addiction counseling programs. “The need is great in non-profit and for-profit community-based organizations that focus on mental health, gerontology, substance use disorder treatment, social services, child and family services and others. Potential jobs for graduates are quite diverse and include residential instructor and counselor, case manager, direct support worker, recovery and support specialist, social worker assistant, group home aide and referral resource specialist for example. The opportunity for employment is great and students will have many options upon graduating from their program.”

To learn more about the two human service certificates, contact Professor Mike O'Bryant at (603) 271-6484 x4269, or mobryant@ccsnh.edu. To learn more about the SUD Tx Certificate, contact Professor Kelly Luedtke at (603) 271-6484 x4174, or kluedtke@ccsnh.edu.

To be considered for admission, complete the online application or the PDF version. General admission requirements are available online.
