Wiffleball Tourney Raises $10,000

CONCORD — NHTI’s annual Wiffleball Benefit Tournament, held on September 17th in the college’s Crocker Wellness Center, raised a record-breaking $10,000 for this year’s beneficiary, Emma, a local teenage girl with autism and associated medical issues.

The Wiffleball Tournament is an annual fundraiser coordinated between NHTI and Community Bridges, a local non-profit agency that supports people with disabilities and their families.  Funds are raised by team registration fees, a raffle, and a silent auction held during the tournament.  Local businesses also contribute food for the tournament, gift certificates and other items to include in the auction, and cash.

This year a dozen 10-player teams competed in the tournament.  Teams pitch to themselves, and each team tried to score as many runs as possible in three frantic, five-minute innings.  The “Waltham Weekend Warriors” won for the second year in a row, but “The Goonies” distinguished themselves as the top fundraisers, bringing in over $3000 for Emma and her family.

Special thanks go to presenting sponsor Southern New Hampshire University.

For more information please contact Kaitlin Moody, NHTI Student Life Activities Coordinator, at (603) 230-4045 or kmoody@ccsnh.edu

Building Inspector Program Honors First Graduates

Building Inspector / Plans Examiner Graduation

CONCORD — On Wednesday January 11th at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Hall on Airport Road, NHTI and 50 members of the New Hampshire Building Officials Association honored the first six graduates of one of the school’s newest programs, the Building Inspector and Plans Examiner (BIPE) Certificate Program.  The new certificate holders – four men and two women – hailed from across the Granite State:  Bill Booth of Nottingham, Mike Cummings of Allenstown, Norma Ditri of Keene, Steve Martin of Concord, Dawn Michaud of Nashua, and Corey Rider of Wolfeboro.

Launched in Fall 2015, this three-semester, 18-credit-hour program prepares students to critically examine permit applications and plans for residential, commercial, and other building types, and to subsequently ensure that the construction of buildings with permits is conducted in accordance and within the provisions of relevant building codes.  The program can help experienced construction workers transition into a new career, or provide the foundation of a new career for those just out of high school.

Tedd Evans, Chief Building Inspector for the City of Concord and one of the driving forces behind the new program says, “Many of the people currently working in this profession are baby boomers, and will be retiring soon.  Unfortunately we’re finding it difficult to attract younger people to the profession to replace them.

“Many people now working as inspectors got into it mid-career, like I did, after working in the construction world.  But we had to learn on-the-job because there was no place to get training, especially for things like construction law.  NHTI’s new certificate program would put anyone – even a high school graduate with no construction experience – at the top of the list for an inspector’s position, because they would already have the theoretical knowledge required.”

The BIPE program meets in the evening, and is financial aid eligible.  All courses are three credits.  Students may sign up for individual courses, as well as for the certificate.

For more information about the BIPE program, visit https://www.nhti.edu/academics/programs-study/engineering-technology-programs/building-inspector-and-plans-examiner, or contact Admissions at (603) 230-4011 or nhtiadm@ccsnh.edu.

President Susan B. Dunton (far right) looks on as students (from left) Jennette Wolfgram (Nursing), Courtnie Clark (Nursing), and Danielle Bragdon (Human Services) accept the $6,500 check from the Zonta Club of Concord. Not pictured are Krista Boyce and Jessica Daniels, who also received Zonta Club scholarships.

CONCORD — The Zonta Club of Concord has awarded $6,500 in scholarships to five NHTI students: Krista Boyce (Hillsboro), Danielle Bragdon (Rumney), Courtnie Clark (Center Barnstead), Jessica Daniels (Northfield) and Jennette Wolfgram (Deerfield). Scholarships from the Zonta Club of Concord are geared toward women who have returned to College five (or more) years after graduating from high school. Ms. Clark and Ms. Wolfgram are both first-year Nursing students. Ms. Boyce is earning a degree in Health Science with a special focus on nutrition. Ms. Bragdon is prepared to graduate later this month with an associate’s degree in Human Services. Ms. Daniels is a first-year student majoring in Dental Hygiene. The awards range from $1,000 to $1,500 per student. This $6,500 contribution from The Zonta Club of Concord represents their largest gift to NHTI, Concord’s Community College.

“The Zonta Club of Concord has been funding scholarships at NHTI for more than a decade,” says Karla Roth, President of the Club. “We have no doubt that these five young ladies will reach their educational and career goals. They are dedicated and hard-working, many of whom are balancing a college workload with their home and family life as well as working part- or full-time jobs. It is not easy what they are doing!  So the Zonta Club is very pleased to offer them financial assistance.”

Susan B. Dunton, President of NHTI, Concord’s Community College says, “The Zonta Club of Concord has been a very generous and longstanding community partner with the College. In addition to providing tuition assistance, Zonta Club members come to the College each spring to meet the students face-to-face. The President of Zonta invites the students to attend their annual auction and offers the students a chance to speak about how the scholarships have helped them.”

Since 2006, the Zonta Club of Concord has awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships to 33 students. For more information about the Zonta Club of Concord, visit www.zontadistrict1.org/area-1/concord-nh.html.

Graduates lining up in the Quad before Commencement

CONCORD — At 10:00 am on Friday May 19th, NHTI held its 67th Annual Commencement Exercises in perfect weather on the lawn behind Little Hall.  The college offers 88 associate degree, certificate and diploma programs to more than 7,000 students annually.  However, only students in the 37 associate degree programs participate in commencement.  This year, NHTI awarded 607 associate degrees including 58 in criminal justice, 47 in nursing, and 95 in general studies.  This year’s class also includes 94 graduates in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).

In her opening remarks, President Susan B. Dunton highlighted a handful of this year’s graduates for special recognition.

Criminal Justice major Meshack Bukuru came to NHTI all the way from Burundi in Central Africa.  A New Hampshire resident since middle school, he is very familiar with the challenges and fear his community faces regarding law enforcement.  It was his goal at that very early age to become a police officer.  Meshack's capstone project included preparing a report on how the police can best approach and work with the Burundi community in New Hampshire.

Lee Anne Ames is an outstanding Information Technology student, always at the top of her class. Last year, she was one of two students in the nation to win a full scholarship from Twitch, a subsidiary of Amazon, to attend an annual women in technology conference in Houston. She always helped other students, and was one of the leading contributors at “Girls Technology Day”, a yearly event at held at NHTI to encourage middle school girls to explore careers in technology. Lee Anne says, “I’m on a personal mission to help young women get started in technology!”

Edie Hamilton started in our General Studies program, and is graduating today with a Nursing degree.  She won the Dr. Goldie Crocker award for nursing excellence -- which is the same award that her mother won 16 years ago when she was a nursing student at NHTI after serving in the U. S. Army!  Edie is now working on Concord Hospital's oncology floor.

Jordan Vachon was admittedly shy and timid when she arrived on campus. But she got involved with Phi Theta Kappa, NHTI’s honor society, as the membership coordinator last year, and the leader within began to shine.  Jordan welcomed the challenge of serving as our chapter president this year.   She won a Coca Cola New Century Scholarship this spring, led the chapter in receiving “reach awards” for membership recruitment, and represented New Hampshire as a flag bearer at PTK’s National Catalyst Conference in Nashville this spring. In her own words, “Phi Theta Kappa promotes what I think is the most noble thing humans are capable of doing: it promotes the sharing of our experiences, the exchange of our thoughts, and the application of our ideas without socioeconomic, racial, gender or ability-based barriers.”

Lydia Stacy accomplished many incredible feats while at NHTI. She has a near-perfect GPA. She is a true Renaissance woman, excelling in the arts and sciences. She has served as president of The Eye, NHTI's campus literary journal. Lydia has helped celebrate the writing of students from the past 25 years, some of whom are now police chiefs, teachers, and one, a federal judge. And Lydia's journey is similarly noteworthy. She has written about one of her southern ancestors who sent his daughter, Lucy Overton Hobby, to a small college in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1870, shortly after the Civil War. Today Lydia becomes the sixth generation woman in her family to earn the title of college graduate.

In keeping with college tradition, the speakers at this year’s commencement were the recipients of the three most prestigious student awards granted by the college.  Colby Chaput of Swanzey, NH, winner of this year’s Lynx Award for outstanding service, has been an amazing Resident Assistant (RA) and Head Resident Assistant (HRA) at NHTI for the past two years.  He took the lead in organizing two significant events sponsored by the Residence Life Department that focused on substance abuse: Project Crash and Awake, Aware, Alive.  He was also selected for the Newman Civic Fellowship award through Campus Compact, which recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.

This year’s Institute Leadership Team Award for extraordinary contributions to the academic and social missions of NHTI went to Kate Andritz of Stark, NH.  Like Colby, Kate has been a resident assistant for the past two years, building strong communities in the residence halls and encouraging her residents to get involved as much as possible.  She was also a star player on NHTI's softball team.

But Kate's primary activity was the Alternative Spring Break Club (ASB); this year she was the club's treasurer and trip leader.  Through ASB, Kate volunteered for the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation, Pope Memorial SPCA of Concord Merrimack County, The Friends Program, Boys and Girls Club of America, Families in Transition, McKenna House and more.  She has completed over 60 hours of community service, plus 20 hours while on the group’s Fort Hood, TX service trip.

The President’s Award for Outstanding Citizenship signifies the total contributions of a student to NHTI, which must include extensive participation in social and academic activities.  This year’s recipient is Electronic Engineering Technology (EET) graduating senior Andrew Allard of Franklin, NH.  For his senior project, Andrew undertook the daunting task of reviving NHTI’s long-dormant solar tracking array, which had not worked for over a decade.  Completing this task took creativity, initiative, persistence, and an in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering and computer programming.  At the same time, Andrew took a heavy course load in EET, was a student leader, tutored in the Academic Center for Excellence, chaired the Electronic Engineering club.

This year, NHTI also awarded an Honorary Degree to Helmut “Hal” Koch, co-founder of Exacom, a Concord-based telecommunications firm, and a longtime supporter of NHTI.  Koch has served as a member of the advisory board of NHTI’s electronic engineering technology program for many years, and as a member of the NHTI institute advisory board since 1995, including as chair of the board from 2013-2017.  Over the years, Exacom has hired dozens of NHTI graduates from the engineering technology programs, and the firm has provided tuition assistance to help many of them continue their studies in pursuing bachelor’s degrees.

In the words of President Dunton, “Hal Koch is a tireless advocate of education, and of the community college model in particular. His commitment to NHTI is exemplified by the countless hours he has devoted to supporting NHTI academic programs, legislative advocacy, fundraising efforts and the college mission. Hal is a true friend and ambassador of the college.”

Finally, each of the 584 graduates (grouped by majors) was called by name to receive his or her degree.  It was a proud moment for the students, their families and friends – and for the faculty and staff of the college.

Allied Dental Programs Welcome “Dexter Jr”

Dexter Jr.

CONCORD — Thanks to a grant of $7,410 from the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation, NHTI, Concord’s Community College recently purchased a new DXTTR (Dental X-ray Teaching and Training Robot) Jr. for its Allied Dental Education programs.

The Allied Dental Education programs at NHTI train roughly 100 new dental students every year (about 30 dental assistants and 70 dental hygienists), and offer continuing education classes for practicing professionals.  While the students ultimately hone their skills through supervised practice on actual patients in the school’s dental clinic, they practice on manikins until they can demonstrate that they are ready to work on live patients.

The school had several adult-size manikins, but only one child-size model – and that one was outdated.  Purchased in 2003, it was designed in the era of film-based x-rays and could not accommodate the larger sensors used in modern digital radiology.

“Students need practice on children, as much if not more so than adults, in order to develop clinical skills and meet scaling requirements,” says Allied Dental Education Department Head Debra Albrecht, “but in our clinic setting students see more adult patients than children.”

“Dexter Jr” is designed to replicate a child 7-9 years of age, with life-like mixed dentition including tooth buds and partially erupted adult teeth.  It is specifically designed to accommodate modern radiology sensors.

“We are proud to support NHTI’s Allied Dental Education programs through assisting with the purchase of this important, updated equipment.  We know that this updated manikin will help NHTI’s students practice their clinical skills which they will bring with them as they enter the workforce,” said Kathleen B. Walker, Treasurer of the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation.

“The Northeast Delta Dental Foundation has been a longtime generous partner to our Allied Dental Education programs,” says NHTI President Dr. Susan B. Dunton.  “We thank them for once again helping to ensure that our programs remain at the cutting edge of dental education, so that we can continue to provide top flight dental professionals to serve the needs of our state.”

In the rush to train in-demand STEM skills, don’t forget about emotional intelligence

NHTI IT student meditating

Concord, NH – Mindful communication isn’t a concept traditionally required when pursuing an Associate degree in an IT-related field, but at NHTI-Concord’s Community College, learning about emotional intelligence, patience, and nonverbal communication cues are key parts of the curriculum. This past fall, NHTI integrated its Mindful Communication Certificate program with the IT Department, and since then, every student pursuing an Associate degree in any of NHTI’s IT programs takes the mindful communication courses as well.

“Mindfulness involves opening one’s self more fully to moments and experiences in life so that you notice the factors that typically influence behavior and perception on an unconscious level,” said Dan Huston, NHTI English professor, who spearheaded the creation of the 11-credit Mindful Communication Certificate. “What students learn through the program allows them to be more impactful, responsive, and effective when communicating with those who lack technical knowledge, for example.”

The stereotype – and sometimes reality – of IT workers being introverted is no longer an excuse for lackluster soft skills, as employers expect new software developers, engineers, and other information technology professionals to be good communicators and collaborators to help them be more effective as teams and in project work.

In New Hampshire, technology companies are struggling to find qualified workers for thousands of currently unfilled tech jobs, according to Jason Alexander, CEO of Alexander Technology Group, a recruiting and staffing firm that serves New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

“However, few of those jobs focus solely on technology skills, especially for new graduates and those just starting out in their careers,” Alexander said. “Whether staffing a help desk or writing software for a company, understanding how to communicate with people across departments is a requirement.”

Both students and the business community say NHTI and Huston’s approach is working.

“NHTI listened to industry feedback about needing these soft skills along with the high-quality technical training,” said Ryan Barton, CEO of Belmont and Manchester-based IT and cybersecurity firm Mainstay Technologies, and a member of NHTI’s curriculum advisory committee. “The proof that the Mindful Communication in IT program is effective is in the caliber of students graduating from the program – they’re phenomenal, and the business community is noticing.”

Mindfulness and communication training is also a game changer for students as it creates opportunities for growth and leadership, flexibility, adaptability, and the confidence to handle challenges instead of avoiding them.

“I took the class because it was required, but I’m noticing it gave me the skills necessary to better relate to my friends and my family and gear my responses in a way to eliminate issues that might cause misconceptions in our conversations,” said
Jacob Washer, who is working towards his Associate degree in IT at NHTI.

The certificate in Mindful Communication includes courses in communication, English composition, introduction to literature, and a capstone course. The courses satisfy general education requirements, which means no additional coursework for students pursuing an Associate degree in IT. The program has been so popular that other departments at NHTI are considering incorporating it into their degree requirements; human services and addiction counseling just recently received final approval to include it in their programs.

Plans are also in the works to introduce more students, faculty, businesses and the community to the concept of mindfulness in communication through a conference slated for September 8. Focused on mindfulness in society, the event will include a keynote talk by Congressman Tim Ryan and several workshops by leading figures in the fields of mindfulness in education, business, healthcare, and spirituality. The event will take place at NHTI. Find more details about the conference here.

NHTI Graduates Nearly 600

Class Marshalls Nolan McGurn and Eric Miller

CONCORD — At 10:00 am on Friday May 18th, NHTI held its 68th Annual Commencement Exercises in perfect weather on the lawn behind Little Hall.  The college offers 92 associate degree, certificate and diploma programs to more than 7,000 students annually.  However, only students in the 42 associate degree programs participate in commencement.  This year, NHTI awarded 583 associate degrees including 47 in criminal justice, 39 in nursing, and 123 in general studies.  This year’s class also includes 97 graduates in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).

In her opening remarks, President Susan B. Dunton highlighted a handful of this year’s graduates for special recognition.  Some of these follow below.

Ha Chu, who is graduating today with honors from the rigorous Dental Hygiene Program, arrived from Vietnam six years ago. Since that time she has mastered difficult concepts, new terminology, and cultural conventions that even native English speakers might find challenging. It is obvious that her professors feel the same way; she has earned high grades and praise for her performance in her studies and clinical work, and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She is also a mother, and is eager to embrace her new country as a new American citizen.

Justin Place was determined to go back to school in order to make a better life for his family. He has worked 45+ hours a week while maintaining an almost perfect GPA, in addition to fulfilling clinic 24 hours a week. He has 3 children, who have been very understanding but also competitive. They take his exams off the refrigerator in order to replace them with their own!  He is grateful for his loving and supportive wife, who has done everything over the last five years so that he could attend school.  His grades are his gift to her for all the extra work of raising a family that ended up on her. He is now employed at Elliot Hospital as a Radiologic Technologist.  He and his wife pooled their money together in order to fly his parents up here from Mississippi to see him graduate today.

In September 2009, Laxmi Khatiwada came to New Hampshire with her family from a refugee camp in Nepal and roots in Bhutan. Coping with tragedy and hardship, Laxmi became a shining star, the very embodiment of perseverance, passion, and compassion. She values community, family, and faith, and her studies here allowed her to further her knowledge of herself, others, and the world. She has been involved with NHTI’s Multicultural Fair, a highlight of her time here, along with her work at our Health and Wellness Fair. She teaches yoga, practices meditation, journaling, and lives a mindful life. Her poetry, published in NHTI's literary journal, won an Editors' Choice Award. She’s been an active participant in the Environmental Action Club, and was hired by the board for the Sycamore Community Garden, located on campus, where she serves as a liaison and interpreter for many low-income gardeners.

Adam Mullen is receiving an associate degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology with an almost perfect GPA.  He also served as the President of the Alternative Spring Break Club.  What is even more amazing about Adam is that he is legally blind.  It would be an understatement to say that the first time he had a machine shop class, the faculty were a little nervous about letting him run a machine tool.  However, in every way he has proved to be a highly adept learner, never letting his disability stand in his way.  Adam has already secured a fulltime job as a machinist with Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, CT.

For the past four summers, Rachel Cook, who is receiving her Education degree today, has been spending over a month in Romania and Moldova as part of a mission team that provides summer camp experiences for children in orphanages.  A favorite experience has been working with a population of persons with intellectual disabilities who are institutionalized, bringing dignity and love to a group of people who have been rejected by their own country.  Rachel has maintained a perfect GPA, recently received the Future Educators award, and was hired this past December as a para-educator in Bow.

In keeping with NHTI tradition, the speakers at this year’s commencement were the recipients of the three most prestigious student awards granted by the college.

Human Service major Adam J. Peak of New Boston, NH spoke on behalf on NHTI’s veteran students.  This year’s Lynx Award, presented to a student or club which has made an outstanding contribution in an area such as community service, athletics, a student organization or an academic department, went to NHTI’s Veterans Club, which works to raise money and respond to requests to help college and community veterans in need.  The club raised over $4000 this year in support of projects such as the Gold Star Memorial at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen; a coat/winter gear drive for veterans in need; and Operation Delta Dog, which trains service dogs for veterans with health issues.

Adam’s remarks, which focused on the price veterans pay for the “free” education they receive, got a standing ovation from the commencement audience.

This year’s Institute Leadership Team Award for extraordinary contributions to the academic and social missions of NHTI went to Rachel Pitt of Londonderry, NH.  A nontraditional student who returned to college after the last of her four children reached their late teens years, Rachel shows what it truly means to be a lifelong learner.  She maintained a 4.0 GPA as a General Studies major over multiple semesters, and acted as a role model to younger students, always there to listen to their concerns and help them when appropriate.

Rachel was also an integral part of The Eye, NHTI’s student literary journal, serving as systems manager and as a member of the editorial board.  Her own photographs and writing will be featured in this year’s journal, including two well-researched pieces on college success and the link between carbs and obesity.

Rachel spoke about the challenge of returning to college as an adult student, essentially saying that if she could do it, anyone can.

The President’s Award for Outstanding Citizenship signifies the total contributions of a student to NHTI, which must include extensive participation in social and academic activities.  This year’s recipient is Natalie J. Baker of Sutton, NH, selected for the many contributions she has made to the NHTI community through her participation in academics, athletics, residence life and student activities.

Natalie participated in numerous programs during her time at NHTI, including Softball, Summer Lynx, Lynx to Leadership, LEAP 101, the Student Leadership Retreat, Campus Activities Board, the Student Ambassador Program, Student Senate, and Strout Hall Council.  She worked as a clerk in the Athletics Office and as a Resident Assistant in North Hall.  She represented the student body both as past Student Senate President and the student representative on the Institute Leadership Team.  Her maturity and natural leadership abilities set her apart from other students, and she was conscientious about making decisions that served both the college and its students.

Natalie’s message was about the value of participation in whatever community one finds oneself a part of, be it college or society at large.

Following the speakers, each of the 583 graduates (grouped by majors) was called by name to receive his or her degree.  It was a proud moment for the students, their families and friends – and for the faculty and staff of the college.

CONCORD — Laura Scott has joined NHTI, Concord’s Community College, as the new Director of Alumni and Development.

CONCORD — On Thursday, June 14, 2018, the Board of Trustees of the Community College System of NH (CCSNH) voted to increase tuition for the seven New Hampshire community colleges by $5 per credit.  Starting with the Fall 2018 semester, tuition at NHTI and the other CCSNH schools will be:

  • $215/credit in-state
  • $323/credit New England Regional Student Program (NERSP)
  • $490/credit out-of-state

"New Hampshire’s community colleges remain the lowest-cost college tuition in NH," says CCSNH Chancellor Ross Gittell.  "CCSNH held the line on tuition for many years, but inflationary pressures necessitate this increase."  Pointing out that tuition at CCSNH schools has increased just 2.38% over the past seven years, Gittell notes, "This is well below inflation over this period and considerably below the average rate of change for community college tuition in all other New England states."
