CONCORD, N.H. –  To address the critical need for Computer Science teachers in the workforce, NHTI has developed a NH State Board of Education certified Teacher Certification Program in Computer Science. This post-baccalaureate program is designed for people who have completed a bachelor’s degree and would like to become a teacher or obtain an additional teacher certification in this field. Affordable and flexible programming options including evening, online, and summer courses allow for work, school, life balance. This program prepares interested candidates to become licensed to teach Computer Science in NH K-12 schools.

NHTI is pleased to be able to offer this program in addition to the other NH State Board fully approved programs in middle and high school sciences, mathematics, special education, and ESOL. The mission of the NHTI Teacher Education Conversion Program (TECP) is to work with adult learners, in the NH critical shortage teaching areas, to assist these career changers in becoming licensed teachers.

NHTI will hold an Information Night on Wednesday, July 31st, 5:30 pm in the NHTI Library living room for those interested in more information. Come and meet the faculty, and see what program completers and current candidates in the program have to share about their experiences in the TECP. More information may be found at https://www.nhti.edu/tecp_info_night

CONCORD, N.H. –  Recently, NHTI―Concord’s Community College underwent an extensive compliance audit which reviewed the administration of military educational benefits to qualifying students from Spring 2015 through Spring 2019. NHTI served between 160-230 qualifying students per semester. Out of those between 91-147 were using Veterans educational benefits. The audit revealed no compliance issues.

NHTI has made a commitment to help Veterans and active duty military personnel succeed in their academic endeavors, and help these students travel through the college application process and the military educational benefit enrollment process. Elizabeth Pontacoloni, NHTI’s Certifying Official says she considers it a pleasure working with this population of students. “These students are motivated and eager to take advantage of what we offer here. Making the transition to college is sometimes difficult. I enjoy making it easier.”

Saturday, September 14th, 8 am – 4 pm

CONCORD — NHTI—Concord’s Community College, will host a two-day conference on “Mindfulness in Society” on September 13th and 14th, 2019. Internationally recognized experts in the field of mindfulness—Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH), Judson Brewer, and Rhonda Magee—will speak on Friday afternoon and participate in a reception that evening. It is our hope that this conference, in support of NHTI’s mindful communication courses and certificate program, will support the expansion of mindfulness as a practice throughout New Hampshire, New England, and beyond.” Friday’s keynote speakers will discuss how mindfulness relates to issues that are of vital importance in our lives, including politics, addiction, and equality.

Registration for Friday’s keynote talks and the reception is $50, which includes food samples and drink tastings from local restaurants, breweries, and wineries. The cost for Saturday’s workshops is $125, including continental breakfast and lunch. Tickets for both days are $150. Register online at https://www.nhti.edu/mindfulness_conference

Legal Nurse Consultant Certificate Program Information Night

CONCORD — On Wednesday, August 7, NHTI will hold an Information Night for people interested in its Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC) Program. The growing complexity of the health care system, and its increasing entanglement with the legal system, has given rise in recent years to a new class of professional:  the Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC).  LNCs are professional nurses with both clinical expertise and training in the law. They provide an invaluable service to both the medical and legal professions.

NHTI, Concord’s Community College, offers an on-site certificate program in this growing field.  Approved by the American Bar Association, the program is designed for experienced Registered Nurses who are interested in becoming Legal Nurse Consultants.  This program provides the legal knowledge and practical field experience LNCs require to evaluate, analyze and offer informed opinions on the delivery of healthcare and resulting outcomes.

LNCs can serve in a variety of settings including hospitals and other health care facilities, insurance companies, law firms, medical malpractice and workers' compensation organizations, and private LNC practices.  The responsibilities of an LNC are broad, and include:

  • analysis of medical records,
  • determining if standards of care have been breached,
  • investigation of risk management issues,
  • evaluation of medical malpractice claims and workers’ compensation matters.

Although a Legal Nurse Consultant can perform many tasks performed by an attorney, legal work performed by an LNC must be under the supervision and direction of an attorney.

The Information Night will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in NHTI’s McRury Hall, room 140.

For more information about NHTI’s Legal Nurse Consultant certificate program, contact Department Chair Stacey Peters at (603) 271-6484, ext. 4274 or speters@ccsnh.edu or visit https://www.nhti.edu/legal-nurse-info-night

CONCORD - The National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) Commission on the Accreditation of Early Childhood Higher Education Programs announced that NHTI was granted first-time accreditation of its Associate of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. To earn and retain accreditation, programs must demonstrate a number of rigorous standards including curriculum development and field experiences for students. Diana Menard, Department Chair of Child and Family Studies shares that “achieving this accreditation helps demonstrate our important work in developing strong students to enter the Early Childhood field, which in turn supports working families and provides stability to employers around the state.”

Seventy-five students are registered for the Fall semester at NHTI.

CONCORD— A well-deserved win against Williamson College of the Trades on Saturday, November 2, 2019 earned NHTI-Concord’s Community College Men’s Basketball Coach Paul Hogan the 600th win of his career. Hogan’s career has spanned over 35 years and has included eight years as head coach at Plymouth State College (1990-1998) and 19 years as head coach at NHTI (2000-present). “It is just great to get another win” said Coach Hogan when asked on win number 600. “I have had really good players; some great assistant coaches and the key thing has been getting the players to buy into the team.”

In 2005 Hogan’s men’s basketball team earned the first ever national championship in New Hampshire by leading the Lynx to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship. Throughout his career at NHTI his teams have consistently earned regular season championships with the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) and competed nationally through the USCAA. Since 2000 Hogan has served as NHTI Athletic Director and is dedicated to building solid intercollegiate athletic programs that attract student-athletes committed to learning and competing on regional and national arenas.

Hogan joins two other coaches in the state of NH who have earned the honor of winning 600 games, Stan Spirou who has retired from Southern New Hampshire University and Keith Dickson who is at Saint Anselm College.

On November 13, 2019 at 1 pm there will be a celebration to honor Hogan for his achievement in the Student Center. This event is open to the public.

For his 600th win NHTI was led by Sean Riley (Washington, DC) who tallied 20 points (8-12 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 2-2 FT), five steals and a pair of rebounds. Sean Menard (Chichester, NH) added 14 points (5-11 FG, 4-9 3-FG), two steals and two rebounds. Team Captain JQ Thurmond (Monticello, GA) finished the game with 14 points (6-14 FG, 0-1 3-FG, 2-2 FT) five steals, five rebounds and three assists.

NHTI-Concord’s Community College Receives Grant from Northeast Delta Dental

Concord, NH – The Allied Dental Education Department is pleased to announce that we have received a $5,000 grant from Northeast Delta Dental Foundation in support of our portable dental clinic. This clinic has been operating in partnership with the Merrimack Valley High School since 1997, which was established as part of the Community Clinic course at NHTI.

During the 2018/2019 school year, 16 NHTI Allied Dental Health students provided care to approximately 50 high school students, who often required multiple visits to the clinic in order to complete their treatments. This partnership provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to interact with community patients, while offering no-cost dental care to those seeking to improve their oral health.

“The generous grant from the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation will help NHTI purchase much needed equipment in order to sustain this program. The equipment we are using is original from when the partnership was started in 1997 and it is time to update”, said Deb Albrecht, Department Head of NHTI’s Allied Dental Health Program.
