Wings of Knowledge Presents Leigh Burrows

CONCORD — On Tuesday January 28th at 7:00 pm in the Library Living Room, NHTI’s Wings of Knowledge lecture series presents Mindfulness and the Inner World of Teaching and Learning with Dr. Leigh Burrows.  This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Burrows has an interest in the contemplative dimensions of education at all levels.  Her background in Western forms of meditation and her experience as a Waldorf/Steiner teacher provide a foundation for embedding this dimension in curriculum and pedagogy in public schools and universities.  She is passionate about the development of a secular approach to mindfulness that is more suited for Western consciousness than the more commonly seen Buddhist orientations.

Leigh takes the view that it is essential to have a mindfulness guide who authentically embodies the spirit or essence of the practices being taught and can accompany us at least part way on our journey.  She has published in the areas of wellbeing, relationships, mindfulness, spirituality in education, and autism.  Her teaching topics, supervision, consultancy, and counseling work are focused around relationships for learning, wellbeing, creating calmer classrooms for vulnerable students, alternative education and mindfulness.  For more information see Leigh’s blog: http://deepeningmindfulness.org.

This experiential workshop and talk includes mindfulness practices, as well as case studies and research results from Dr. Burrows’ work with educators in Australia.  Case study examples will show how mindfulness practice in a teaching context can enhance both teachers’ and students’ sense of inner security in the classroom, allowing them to form connections and take the kinds of risks that make learning possible.  Dr. Burrows’ research suggests that the more mindfulness is practiced at home and in the classroom, the more mindfulness begins to naturally permeate other areas of our lives, leading to greater balance, wellbeing, sense of meaning and purpose and compassion for our own and other’s difficulties.

Participants will develop an increased awareness and understanding of the value and potential of including mindfulness in education at all levels, with an underlying aim of the session being to highlight that mindfulness does not need to be an “add-on” to our current work.  Rather, it can be infused throughout all our teaching and learning spaces.

Launched in 2001-02, Wings of Knowledge is an annual series of cultural events presented by the college.  All events are free and open to the public.  The series supports and expands upon NHTI’s wide variety of academic offerings, and is another element in the college’s expanding community college mission.  For further information call 603-230-4028.

CONCORD —NHTI, Concord’s Community College has awarded 21 first-year students $500 President’s Fund for Excellence Merit Scholarships for the spring 2014 semester.  The awards are given in recognition of outstanding academic performance — all 21 students hold a 4.0 grade point average.

The recipients include:  Architectural Engineering Technology major Billy Kitchens (Concord); General Studies majors Dezray Adams (Concord), Lena Folsom (Rochester), James McCann (Manchester), Meghan McCormick (Loudon), Danielle McCrossin (Hooksett), Faith Turner (Greenfield) and Alexandra Smith (Canterbury); Business Administration major Rhiannon Pochopin (Manchester); Criminal Justice majors Kelsey Myers (Chester) and Cheryl Trudeau (Manchester); Computer Engineering Technology major James Schumacher (Concord); Diagnostic Medical Sonography majors Cassandra Mcginnity (Kennebunkport, ME) and Samantha Reynolds (Concord); Early Childhood Education major Bobbi Olivier (Raymond); Electrical Engineering Technology major Kyle Legg (Bow); Human Services major Shannon Healey (Boscawen); Information Technology major Robert Hoar (Webster); Orthopaedic Technology majors Kathryn James (Fremont) and Justine Roy (Nashua); and Robotics and Automation Engineering Technology major Zhangxi Feng (Pelham).

“What a great accomplishment, to earn a 4.0 GPA in the first semester at college,” says NHTI Interim President Stephen Caccia.  “Students face a lot of pressures in the beginning, both academically and socially, with meeting new people and being in a new place, away from family.  We are proud to award President’s Fund for Excellence scholarships to these students who worked very hard.”

In 2010, NHTI established the President’s Fund for Excellence as an unrestricted fund to meet the highest priorities. The Fund directly supports NHTI students and academic programs.  More than $100,000 has been raised for the Fund.   With proceeds from the Fund, NHTI purchased a 3-Dimensional Rapid Prototype Printer in 2013 for the Engineering Technology Departments.  In addition to the 2014 merit scholarship awards, the President’s Fund for Excellence will support other critical needs at NHTI over the coming year.

NHTI to Host Girls Technology Day

CONCORD — On Wednesday March 19, NHTI, Concord’s Community College, will proudly host the second annual Girls Technology Day, an initiative of the New Hampshire Department of Education’s Career Development Bureau.  Last year, demand far outstripped the capacity of the fledgling program, so this year’s event has been expanded to accommodate the 300 girls who are registered to attend.

“In New Hampshire, as in other states, there is a severe shortage of women pursuing technical careers,” says conference chair Mary Laturnau, who works for the NH DOE's Career Development Bureau.  Fewer than two percent of students pursuing computer science degrees in NH colleges, for example, are women.  Girls Technology Day is one step toward trying to reverse that trend.

Laturnau says that the enthusiasm for the project across the state has been inspiring.  “This has truly been a collaboration of every level of education in New Hampshire,” including high schools, community colleges, and universities.  The event is funded in part by a Perkins Grant for non-traditional career development, and grants/donations from EPSCoR, PSNH, NH Space Consortium-NASA, Admix, People’s United Bank, Red River, Dyn, Freudenberg, InterOperability Lab, Alexander Technologies, Liberty Mutual Insurance and NHTI-Concord’s Community College.

The group decided to focus on grades 8, 9 and 10, because that is that age at which many young people begin focusing on interests that may ultimately become career paths.  Paradoxically, it is also the age at which girls often seem to get “turned off” to math, science and technology.  Invitations went out to New Hampshire high schools, but educators were urged not to make the event a mandatory field trip.  “We want girls who want to attend,” says Laturnau.

The girls will break up into a series of hands-on workshops exploring various high technology topics.  Students will be able to attend four of the available sessions, including:

  • 3-D Modeling
  • Careers in Technology
  • Game Programming with Greenfoot
  • Inventing Apps for Android Phones
  • Kodu Game Lab
  • Making Ethernet Cables 101
  • VEX Robotics
  • Measuring Voltages with Digital Multimeters and PC Power Supply Testers
  • Girl’s Social Media Web Page
  • Industrial Robotics
  • Reverse Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Networking

The workshops will be led by educators and business leaders from various New Hampshire universities, community colleges and industries.

During their lunch break the students will attend a technology exhibition in the NHTI gym.  Featured exhibitors include several area schools (UNH,UNH Manchester, Manchester Community College and host NHTI), high-tech businesses (BAE, TEC-Ed Concepts, Discovery Center and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard), Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Despite this year’s expanded program, there were still interested schools that had to be turned away due to lack of capacity.  So the organizers are already looking ahead to next year, and the possibility of spreading Girls Technology Day across multiple venues in order to accommodate the intense interest the program has generated.  Clearly there are young women out there who are interested in technology, if only they are given the chance to explore the many possibilities open to them.

NHTI Launches Math Program

complex math formulas

CONCORD — In the Fall of 2014, NHTI will launch a new 2-year Associate Degree program in Mathematics.  This practically-oriented program includes a foundation in computer programming and three semesters of calculus-based physics, along with a range of general education requirements.  The idea is for this program to provide a solid background for just about any type of 4-year math, physics or engineering degree a student might choose to pursue.

"We went to UNH and met with their Math and Physics department heads," says Kate Sawal, head of NHTI's math/physics department.  "As a result we created five new courses, all of which will transfer as equivalent.  It was important to show them not only that our curriculum met their criteria, but that we would be able to maintain the rigor they require."  Articulation (transfer) agreements with Plymouth State and SNHU are also in the works.

NHTI’s Math Department has nine full-time math faculty and about 30 adjuncts.  The College recently purchased lab equipment to support the new program, especially the calculus-based physics courses not previously offered at the college.

The development of this new program is part of NHTI’s commitment to expanding its offerings in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.  The degree will prepare students for employment in STEM positions in industry, as well as for continued study at the baccalaureate level.  Kate Sawal notes that students can take "approximately two courses for the price of one" at NHTI compared to New Hampshire universities, making NHTI a very attractive alternative for students seeking to launch an academic or technical career.

But for Sawal, establishing a math major at NHTI has been a long-time goal, with ramifications far beyond the current drive to produce tech-savvy graduates to work in local industries.

"I believe in the power of math," she says.  "When we teach people to think like this, to do this kind of work, we are creating problem-solvers.  These are the people who are going to be able to go out and work on solving society's problems -- maybe not with calculus, but with that kind of rigorous thinking."

Community College System of NH logo

Concord, NH – Ten innovative projects at NH’s community colleges to enhance student success and workforce readiness were selected for seed funding in the second round of grants from the Community College Innovation Fund of New Hampshire.

Two of the proposals are from faculty at NHTI, Concord’s Community College.  The first, developed by Kate Sawal, Department Chair of Mathematics and Physics at NHTI, uses technology and web-based learning modules to improve math preparedness of incoming college students at zero cost to students.   The team will create a mathematics “refresher course” for summer enrollment, using Khan Academy content that is designed to enable incoming students to bypass remedial math and place directly into college-level math courses.

The second, developed by  Gale Hall, Department Chair of NHTI’s Child and Family Studies programs, in partnership with Patricia Finnigan-Allen of White Mountains Community College, will result in a more authentic and enriched learning experience for online and evening early childhood education students by creating video documentation of course competencies and developing videos from the early childhood Lab School to expose online and evening students to best practices in early childhood settings typically more available to traditional classroom students.

The Innovation Fund was created in 2012 by private donations to foster innovative ideas within the State’s community colleges.  College faculty and staff develop projects and apply for the funds, which are evaluated by a panel which includes New Hampshire venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and business leaders.  In addition to funding, recipients will benefit from access to a group of experts organized to support the Innovation Fund efforts.

Each project will serve as a pilot effort that can potentially be scaled up to create broad impact across the system, according to Ross Gittell, CCSNH Chancellor.  “Education is a rapidly changing field, and today’s innovative ideas will be tomorrow’s leading educational approaches,” said Gittell.   “We are making sure those strategies are developed and implemented in New Hampshire for the benefit of NH students, employers, communities and taxpayers.”

Other proposals funded in the current round include projects designed to:

  • Develop an industry-driven degree program in applied data analytics targeted for business owners and employees in health care, hospitality industries and at small and medium sized established
  • Improve interest, enrollment and retention in pre-engineering programs
  • Enhance remote access to curriculum and courses to support learners in rural areas, using hybrid course delivery and course capture technology
  • Develop a marketing campaign to promote accelerated advanced manufacturing programs to high school students
  • Increase system-wide course-delivery in STEM classes
  • Create a mentor cohort program for faculty engaged in online teaching and technology integration
  • Partner with industry to develop curriculum, credentials, and associates degree programs and to increase the pipeline of future software developers
  • Develop a high quality online/hybrid lab science course for students that can be shared throughout CCSNH

Charter contributors to the fund include Paul Holloway, Chairman of the Holloway Automotive Group and Chairman of the CCSNH Board of Trustees; Craig Benson, technology entrepreneur and former Governor of the State of NH; Jeremy Hitchcock, CEO of Dyn, Inc and a member of the CCSNH Board of Trustees; Jesse Devitte, Managing Director and Co-founder of Borealis Ventures; and Matt Pierson, Director and past Chairman of the NH High Technology Council and Managing Director with Dunn Rush & Co.

Devitte, managing partner of Borealis Ventures and a charter supporter of the Innovation Fund, noted, “We are happy to help seed the impressive ideas and initiatives of faculty and staff at our community college system, which we see as a critical focal point in higher education and workforce training. This mirrors what we do working with entrepreneurs every day in our role as venture capitalists.  We applaud CCSNH for applying private market principles to public higher education.”

"Dyn continues to support the community college innovation fund because it challenges the system's best and brightest thinkers to push the envelope in education.  In this second year of the program, we were impressed with the caliber of the proposals and the powerful, creative ways they address educational challenges and opportunities here in New Hampshire," said Jeremy Hitchcock, CEO of Dyn, Inc.

Matt Pierson, director and past chairman of the NH High Technology Council and managing director with Dunn Rush & Co., said “The projects selected are creative and forward-looking, with the potential to position New Hampshire strongly as a leader in education strategies that ultimately will support a strong economy and quality of life.  I look forward to working with faculty and staff on implementing these new ideas.”

Seed funding awards range from $4,000-$11,000. For additional comments please contact:

Tuition Goes Down at NHTI

Cost comparison amongst NHTI, Mount Washington College, Daniel Webster College, University of New Hampshire, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, Southern New Hampshire University

Concord, NH - Students at NHTI, Concord's Community College, will see lower tuition bills starting in the Fall 2014 academic year.  The Community College System board of trustees today announced a five percent tuition reduction, bringing the in-state per credit cost to $200 from its present level of $210.  A three-credit course will cost $600, down from $630.  For an in-state student taking a minimum full-time course load of twelve credits per semester, annual tuition costs will drop from $5,040 to $4,800.

The New England regional program rate will be $300 per credit, and the out of state rate will be $450 per credit, down from $315 and $478 respectively.  Ninety-five percent of students at New Hampshire’s community colleges are NH residents.

The tuition reduction was announced as New Hampshire’s community colleges enhance their focus on preparing more New Hampshire residents with 21st century skills and providing affordable college-to-career pathways.  New Hampshire’s community colleges offer two-year associate degree programs and short-term certificate programs in a wide variety of career fields, linked to industry sectors with strong labor market demand including information technology, health care, business, hospitality, engineering technology, education and advanced manufacturing.  More than half the students who enroll in New Hampshire’s community colleges intend to pursue transfer to a four-year school after earning an associate degree or some number of credits at the community colleges.  Making the first two years more affordable will be a boost for students and families and increase the supply of skilled workers available for businesses across the state.

The reduction came after the Governor and NH Legislature restored funding to the community college system that had been cut in the previous state budget.  Paul Holloway, chairman of the board of trustees, said, “We committed to the Governor and Legislature that investing in the community colleges would help New Hampshire families and New Hampshire’s economy.  Last year, we froze tuition. We are reducing tuition for the upcoming year.  We have invested in programs like advanced manufacturing and health professions, which helps employers fill high-skilled jobs and strengthens our state’s economy.  And we focused on innovation and efficiencies that help us achieve our mission more cost effectively for students, families and taxpayers. ”

“Making higher education more affordable for all of our families is one of my highest priorities as we work to build a stronger workforce that will lead to innovative economic growth,” said Gov. Maggie Hassan.  “I applaud the leadership of the Community College System of New Hampshire for their decision to reduce tuition and their continued commitment to the success of our students.  This important step forward for our workforce builds on the progress we made in last year’s bipartisan budget to restore investments in higher education in exchange for a tuition freeze.”  (See www.nh.gov for Gov. Hassan’s full statement on the community college tuition reduction.)

Ross Gittell, chancellor of the community college system, said that he and system leaders have been modeling a tuition reduction scenario and were ready to announce the reduction now, instead of making a decision in June as in years past.  “Reducing tuition and bending the cost curve in higher education helps students and their families fit a college education in their budgets,” Gittell said. “Whether students come to the community colleges to train for a career, or as a first step in a four-year college pathway, affordability is essential to their ability to succeed.”  Gittell highlighted the fact that New Hampshire students with an associate degree earn on average 28 percent more than those with only a high school education.  And students who transfer from a community college to a four-year college do as well as those who start out at a four-year college.  Gittell noted that the community colleges and the University System of New Hampshire, as well as other colleges throughout the region, have worked in recent years on making transfers easier.

Adam Moy, a second-year student at Manchester Community College (MCC) and a student member of the board of trustees, knows how important saving money on tuition can be to his fellow-students. “It may enable someone who is only taking one or two classes at a time to take a heavier course load and graduate sooner,” said Moy.  “Or a person considering college will see that the community colleges are working hard to keep costs down, and will feel more confident about making the leap and enrolling.  As a student I’ve been very impressed with the quality of the education and the doors that open to community college graduates.”  Moy, who lives in Manchester, is earning an associate degree in business communications and plans to take advantage of the business degree transfer agreement between MCC and Southern New Hampshire University which allows him to transfer 90 credits, enabling him to complete a bachelor’s degree with just one year of university costs.

NHTI is now accepting registrations now for Summer classes, which begin June 2, and for the Fall semester, which begins on September 2.

NHTI Graduates 600+

CONCORD — At 10:00 am on Friday May 23rd, NHTI held its 64th Annual Commencement Exercises on the lawn behind Little Hall.  The college offers 66 associate degree, certificate and diploma programs to more than 4,500 students annually.  This year, NHTI awarded a record 614 associate degrees, including nearly 60 each in criminal justice and nursing, and over 75 degrees in general studies.  This year’s class also included 29 veterans, and over 100 graduates in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).

In his opening remarks, Interim President Stephen P. Caccia highlighted a handful of this year’s graduates for special recognition.

Visual Arts major Michael Grady came to NHTI with an interest in designing prosthetics, and crafted a multidisciplinary curriculum for himself that ranged from biological science to welding.  Michael will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology to continue his studies in Industrial Design.

Crystal LeBrecqueHealth Science major Crystal Marie Labrecque excelled in her English classes.  Her short story “Blocks” has been accepted for publication in The Painted Cave, a national literary journal.

Sports Management major Daniel Ryan Sweeney was a four year letterman and captain of the men’s basketball team.  He has overcome the social awkwardness brought on by his high-functioning autism to perform extremely well in the classroom and on the court.  Ryan was a two-time recipient of the Jen Kemp Scholarship and numerous team awards, as well as an active participant in many campus activities.

Because of Amanda Phillips’ dyslexia, ADD and OCD, she was once told that she would be lucky to complete high school, and that she would never make it through college. But after her first semester at NHTI she was invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa honor society due to her excellent grades.  She finished up as PTK president, involved with many campus activities, a Sports Management graduate, and will soon be transferring to SNHU.

Ronny StellyIn keeping with NHTI tradition, the main speakers at this year’s commencement were the recipients of the three most prestigious student awards granted by the college: Ronny Stelly of Center Barnstead, a Landscape and Environmental Design major, who spoke on behalf of the Environmental Action Club, collective winners of the Capital Award for outstanding contributions to college life; Jane QuigleyAccounting Major Benjamin Breault of Manchester, this year’s winner of the Institute Leadership Team Award for extraordinary contributions to the academic and social missions of NHTI; and Addiction Counseling major Jane Quigley of Antrim, winner of the President’s Award for Outstanding Citizenship.

Benjamin BreaultCoincidentally, each of the three student speakers told of having to overcome some type of adversity to achieve success at NHTI.  Stelly spoke about having to overcome the disadvantages of being raised as a foster child; Breault told of failing to make the cut for the major he originally intended to pursue; and Quigley mentioned unspecified setbacks in her life that could have been ruinous, but set her on the path to college instead.  All three spoke in different ways about the importance of being willing to step outside one’s “comfort zone,” to take a different path or try something new when circumstances warrant.

Finally, each of the 614 graduates (grouped by majors) was called by name to receive his or her degree.  It was a proud moment for the students, their families and friends – and for the faculty and staff of the college.  And thank goodness the rain held off.

New President Named for NHTI, Concord’s Community College

Concord, NH -  The board of trustees of the Community College System of New Hampshire has appointed Dr. Susan Dunton to be the next president of NHTI, Concord’s Community College.  Dunton was selected as a finalist by a search committee comprised of college, system and community members, chaired by trustee Jeremy Hitchcock, CEO of Dyn, Inc., a Manchester-based technology company, and Susan Huard, president of Manchester Community College.  Dunton was recommended to the board by CCSNH Chancellor Ross Gittell.

“I am very pleased to welcome Susan Dunton to NHTI and the Community College System,” said CCSNH Chancellor Ross Gittell.  “Dr. Dunton is committed to academic excellence, innovation and collaboration with the other community colleges in NH to broaden access and strengthen career opportunities for students, and to lead NHTI during a period of rapid change and significant opportunity.  I look forward to her contributions to NHTI and the community college system.”

Dr. Dunton’s experience in college administration, academic affairs and student services spans three decades at institutions including Lesley College, the Harvard Divinity School and Fisher College in the Boston area;  Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee; and Fontbonne University in St. Louis, MO.   She has facilitated partnerships between community college and four-year research and technical institutions and developed academic programs to meet emerging workforce needs.  She has extensive experience directing student life initiatives and student support services.  Her teaching experience includes courses in management, human resources and career development.

Paul Holloway, chairman of the CCSNH board of trustees, said that Dunton understands that she takes the helm at a time when educational institutions face a fluid and challenging landscape.  “The community college system and the State of New Hampshire are gaining a highly qualified individual who will ensure that NHTI is positioned to meet the needs of students and the 21st century economy,” Holloway said.   “We are confident that we have the right person to meet the challenges and maximize the opportunities before the college.”

NHTI and the statewide community college system are presently focused on increasing access and enrollment to prepare more New Hampshire residents with 21st century skills and strengthen New Hampshire’s workforce.  An early focus of the new president will be on growing enrollment, enhancing operational performance, and promoting programs that support a strong regional and state economy.   The community college system recently announced a 5 percent reduction in tuition for the upcoming academic year after freezing tuition the previous year.

"I am deeply honored to become a part of NHTI’s rich history, and genuinely eager to engage in the life of the college and the region.  The faculty and staff at NHTI are dedicated to providing students with extraordinary educational experiences across the college’s academic disciplines, and it is our goal that our graduates will carry that energy forward in the professions and industries they move on to serve and lead.  As NHTI’s motto expresses, We are all Teachers, We are all Learners.  This is the sense of collective learning and the energy that makes a community college like NHTI great, and enables it to play an essential role for its students and region.  My sincerest thanks to the Board of Trustees and Chancellor Gittell for the trust they have invested in me and the opportunity to serve.”

Dr. Dunton earned a PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT and a Master of Education in Student Personnel Services from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.  She attended the management development program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.  Her personal interests include performing and teaching as a flutist, and mentoring young adults through empowering skills and experiences.

About NHTI:   NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is a fully accredited, public community college serving students, businesses and the community by providing excellent academic, technical and professional education.  NHTI offers over 65 academic programs to more than 4,500 students.  Located in Concord, NH, NHTI is a member of the Community College System of New Hampshire.

NHTI Hosts Network Academy Conference

Branamir Karajcic, Dan Moretto, Jackie Johnson, and Kahekashan Shaik

CONCORD — On Thursday and Friday, June 26 and 27, NHTI, Concord’s Community College hosted a Cisco Academy Conference for high schools and colleges throughout the northeast that offer Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) training.

The conference also marked the 15th anniversary of NHTI’s own CCNA Academy.  NHTI offered its first Cisco networking class in 1999, when it had just one faculty member teaching around 50 students.  The school became a fully certified Cisco Academy in 2001, and today it has four full-time faculty teaching networking to 150 students.

Thursday evening, four recent graduates of NHTI’s Academy (pictured above) spoke in videotaped presentations about the transformative impact that Cisco certification has had upon their lives.

Dan Moretto (second from left) was living at home when his father pushed him toward getting some kind of technical training at NHTI.  Though he was originally drawn toward art and game design, he decided there was more security in networking.  “A lot my friends didn’t go to college,” says Dan.  “Some of them went through IT programs, but they’re still working at McDonald’s.”  Meanwhile Dan, who got his CCNA in 2011, has his own apartment, his own car, and has paid off his student loans.

Branamir Karajcic (far left) moved to the U.S. from Serbia in 2002.  He earned an Associate Degree in Computer Engineering in 2008, but found that jobs were still scarce.  But after getting his CCNA in 2013, “I’ve gone from looking for a job to picking a job.”  On a recent trip to Serbia, he discovered that a CCNA is a ticket to employment even there, despite the 30% unemployment rate.

Jackie Johnson (second from right) was working as a contract employee for a New Hampshire engineering firm.  She had no benefits, and no job security.  Then she earned an Associate Degree and a CCNA in 2010.  “The CCNA opened doors that were otherwise closed,” she says.  “Now I have a professional position with health care, 401K, you name it … and a much improved quality of life.”

It took Kahekashan Shaik (far right) eight years to get her CCNA certification due to health issues, raising three children, and the fact that she and her husband had to share a single car between them.  But it was clearly worth it.  “I had a full time job even before I graduated,” she says, “and we were able to get a second car.  The professors are excellent, very, very helpful.  Because of them I was able to achieve my dreams.”

As moderator David Kotfila of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute remarked after the presentations, “This is why we teach.”

NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is a fully accredited, public community college serving students, businesses and the community by providing excellent academic, technical and professional education.  NHTI offers over 65 academic programs to more than 4,500 students.  NHTI is a member of the Community College System of New Hampshire.

NHTI Debuts New Online Employment Service

CCN Screen Shot

CONCORD — NHTI has launched a new online job search service, open to students, alumni and the general public.  Although the school has long had a “job bank” where local employers could post positions, this all-new service – powered by College Central Network (CCN) – offers far more than just a list of local jobs.

Local employers are encouraged to post jobs to the system and 50 employers have signed on since the site launched in July, posting an average of 15-20 jobs a week.  But job seekers using the system also have access to CCN’s nationwide listings of jobs and internships.  These listings include not only jobs posted to CCN by employers, but also jobs found by CCN’s aggregator programs, which roam the web searching for job listings.  Job seekers can search the listings manually, but they can also set up “agents” to watch for jobs that meet certain criteria and send out an alert when such jobs appear.

But CCN offers more than just lists of job openings; it has a suite of tools to help job seekers get better at … well, at job seeking.  There is the Résumé Builder, which guides users in creating a résumé which can then be uploaded to CCN so that potential employers can view it.  (If you already have a stellar résumé you can simply upload that to CCN.)  There is also Portfolio Central, which helps users assemble an online portfolio of their best work for employers to peruse – especially useful for people in artistic fields.

In addition, CCN offers an extensive and growing collection of podcasts, videos and text articles with advice on every imaginable facet of career building:  from exploring your career interests and choosing a college major, to tips for writing résumés and cover letters, to job hunting advice, interviewing strategies, and much more.

Stephanie Hallet (NHTI 2010) writes, “As soon as I learned NHTI was offering College Central Network for job searches, I joined right away.  As an Information Technology graduate, I appreciate the sheer volume of employment services this site offers, like resume building, assembling online portfolios and podcasts about best practices for job searching. Best of all is that it’s completely free!”

Even if you’re not currently in the job market – or a potential employer – it’s worth checking out!  Visit CollegeCentral.com/NHTI.

CONCORD — Drawing upon its background as New Hampshire’s first and foremost pre-engineering school, and furthering its commitment to the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math), NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is introducing two new Associate Degree programs in Fall 2014: Advanced Manufacturing Process Technology (AMPT) and Civil Engineering Technology (CET).

The AMPT program is designed to give the student a solid foundation in the manufacturing processes related to traditional machine tools and CNC automated machining centers.  There are five major interrelated areas of study: shop and tool room mathematics; interpretation and understanding of engineering drawings; knowledge of machine tool processes and the basic machine tools:  lathe, milling machine, and grinder; CNC programming: mills and lathes; and CNC machine operation.

Students learn the basic theory of the manufacturing processes related to machine tools in the classroom, and apply that theory on industry grade equipment in the laboratory to gain the experience necessary for employment.  The manufacturing processes major field courses all contain several hours of lab time in the machine shop and/or the CNC lab.  Graduates will have the foundation necessary to find employment in industry in positions such as machine operator, entry level machinist, entry level tool maker, CNC machine operator, and/or CNC programmer.

For further information contact Robert Arredondo at (603) 271-6484 x 4105.

The CET program responds to employer needs for graduates who can function effectively in the areas of design and maintenance of highway infrastructure and bridges, as well as structural, civil, environmental, sustainability, and an array of other construction jobs requiring specific training and education in civil engineering.  This program will be of interest to individuals considering jobs in the civil engineering, construction management, surveying, and environmental engineering fields.  In addition, the program provides a solid background for students seeking to transfer into baccalaureate institutions with programs like civil engineering, environmental engineering, surveying, construction management, and fire safety.

As Civil Engineering Technology majors, students will learn to solve design and engineering problems by utilizing skills learned in engineering, mathematics, physics courses.  General education courses such as English, economics and ethics provide additional skills and knowledge required to address both technical and workplace issues.  The CET program culminates in a capstone project or independent study utilizing a wide spectrum of STEM skills.

Although the new CET program is not yet accredited, NHTI plans to seek ETAC of ABET accreditation for the program as soon as possible.

CONCORD — Drawing upon its background as one of New Hampshire’s foremost healthcare training centers, NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is launching two new Associate Degree programs in Fall 2014: Health Science with a concentration in Nutrition and Wellness, and Biology.

The first program builds upon NHTI’s well-established Health Science Degree, but is designed to prepare students for the competitive and ever expanding fields of healthcare and personal wellness services.  In addition to the core requirements for the Health Science Degree (32 credits), the student will be required to take courses in nutrition, pathophysiology, and personal training, and choose from among many different electives for a total of 65-70 credits.  The degree provides a sound academic foundation for the student who wants to pursue an entry-level position in nutrition, health and fitness, public health, or health education, and/or to transfer to a 4-year program in any of those fields.

The Biology program is intended for students who plan to continue their education beyond the associate degree, although students who graduate from this program will also have the skills necessary to work in the field as biological science technicians.  A biology major is recommended for students interested in pursuing further study in biology, botany, zoology, ecology, microbiology, agriculture, forestry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics or marine biology.  This program also provides an excellent foundation for medical, dental and veterinary studies.

For more information on either of these new programs contact Natural Sciences Department Head Amy Liptak, (603) 271-6484 x4243.

Spencer does not let his illness stop him from doing things he loves, like swimming and cooking.

CONCORD — In the first major philanthropic event of the year at Concord’s Community College, NHTI is holding a Charity Wiffle Ball Tournament on Saturday September 20th.  The school is seeking 10-player teams from other colleges, high schools, business, families – “whoever wants to have a great time and make a difference in someone’s life while doing it,” says Chuck Lloyd, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs.

Games begin at 9:00 am and are scheduled every hour throughout the day, both outdoors on the campus quad (weather permitting) and indoors in the Goldie Crocker Wellness Center Gym.  With each team trying to score as many runs as possible in three, five-minute innings, the pace of the tourney is frantic and sure to be a great time.  There will be plenty of refreshments for players, and also raffles and a silent auction during the day.

The Wiffle Ball Tournament is an annual fundraiser coordinated between NHTI and Community Bridges, a local non-profit agency that supports people with disabilities and their families.  This year’s tournament will benefit a local 13-year-old boy named Spencer who has been battling Muscular Dystrophy since the age of four.  Funds are raised by team registration fees and a silent auction held during the tournament.  (The registration fee is $100 from the team members, matched by $100 from a business sponsor.)   Local businesses are also contributing food for the tournament, gift certificates and other items to include in the auction, and cash.  The event is open to the public; admission is by donation.  All proceeds will go into an account for Spencer’s family.
