Dual Enrollment Students Can Earn Bachelors or Masters Degrees

CONCORD — NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is pleased to announce its new Advanced Nursing Partnership with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).  NHTI nursing students who are New Hampshire residents can now apply for dual admission to the Online BSN/MSN programs at SNHU.  The application can be submitted after completion of the first semester of NHTI's nursing program.  There is no extra cost for applying dual admission, and there is no penalty if the student chooses not to go on for an advanced degree.
All classes taken in NHTI's nursing program can be applied toward an advanced degree at SNHU.  Additional general education credits may also be applicable.  A student may apply up to 90 credits from NHTI toward the 120 credits required for a BSN, so that only 30 more credits need to be taken at SNHU.  A student could theoretically complete a BSN degree in as little as 13 months.
Special discounted prices will apply to SNHU classes taken by dual admission students.  SNHU will offer a per-credit-hour scholarship of 50% of the difference between the per-credit-hour tuition rates of NHTI and SNHU.  (Scholarships are available only to NHTI graduates who were awarded an Associates degree in 2012 or later.  Discounted prices do not apply to MSN courses.)  Students who complete the Bachelors degree can continue on into the Masters program.  All BSN courses are applicable toward the MSN degree.  All phases of the program are financial aid eligible.
For further information visit www.nhti.edu/nhti-snhu-advanced-nursing-partnership or contact the NHTI Nursing department at (603) 271-6484 x4154.

Program Supports Environmental Education

NHTI, Concord’s Community College has been selected to receive $5,000 from Northern New England Campus Compact (NNECC) and the Environmental Protection Agency to prepare college students for a lifetime of environmental stewardship, and to change systems and processes on campus to better support environmental education.  Four members of the NHTI faculty will receive training and ongoing support in the development and delivery of courses which include community projects involving climate change or water quality.

Veronica Carter, Professor of Architectural Engineering Technology, Kathleen Curran, Department Head of Human Services and Addiction Counseling, Susanne Smith Meyer, Department Head of Landscape & Environmental Design, and Jessana Palm, Professor of Chemistry and Biological Sciences, will attend a two-day faculty development institute and training at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, June 17-18, 2013.  During and after the institute, this team will develop an action plan and budget for NHTI's use of the $5000 grant.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of almost 1,200 college and university presidents—representing some 6 million students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education.  As the only national higher education association dedicated solely to campus-based civic engagement, Campus Compact promotes public and community service that develops students’ citizenship skills, helps campuses forge effective community partnerships, and provides resources and training for faculty seeking to integrate civic and community-based learning into the curriculum.  Campus Compact’s membership includes public, private, two- and four-year institutions across the spectrum of higher education.

Travel to Spain or Costa Rica with NHTI

Trips can be combined with course work to earn college credit

NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is developing new educational travel opportunities that are open to the general public as well as to students.  NHTI educational tours not only offer extensive sightseeing, but also provide an opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture or environment of a unique destination by participating in an enriched educational experience on location.

Unlike most traditional college travel programs, NHTI’s travel/study experiences do not require a full semester abroad; a typical trip lasts from one to two weeks.  Students wishing to receive credit for these programs can combine them with appropriate classwork.  A journal and final paper is usually required, and class meetings and assigned readings may also be necessary before and after the trip in order to meet the credit requirements.  However, the college also welcomes participants who may simply wish to share in the travel experience.

Currently there are two travel/study abroad programs accepting reservations:  a 10-day trip to Costa Rica in Spring 2014 (March 14-23), and a weeklong visit to Barcelona, Spain, in Summer 2014 (May 26 – June 1).

In Costa Rica, travelers can explore some of the world's most beautiful and unusual plant and animal habitats from the treetops on a canopy tour, from walking trails in the Cloud Forest, and even from their bedroom windows!  Anyone who loves the outdoors will love this trip; it offers plenty of warm sun, beautiful white sand beaches, spectacular scenery and live volcanoes!  But NHTI's Costa Rica program is not only about the country’s environment.  It also offers a unique opportunity to discover another culture and to get to know the people who work hard to conserve and protect their unique environment.

Travelers wishing to earn academic credit for the Costa Rica trip can combine it with NHTI's four credit, online Tropical Ecology and Conservation course (BI 180).

For more information about NHTI’s Spring Adventure in Costa Rica can contact Prof. Amy Liptak or visit www.nhti.edu/travelstudy-abroad-costa-rica.

If art and architecture — or food, wine and beaches — are your thing, Barcelona has a place for you.  On a flexible and immersive visit to the Catalan capital, you’ll see exactly how close the city’s beloved modernist, Antoni Gaudí, got to completing his magnum opus, La Sagrada Familia, which is nothing short of colossal in person.  Gaudí designed the basilica to require construction methods that had not yet been invented, and today, more than 130 years after construction began, its ever-changing edifice sets the tone for the entire city: permanently in flux, and forever looking toward the future.  Other highlights of this trip include:

  • Walking tour of Catalan Street
  • Visit Open Air Plazas
  • Walking tour of the Modernist District
  • Experience a Flamenco Evening, and learn to dance Flamenco
  • Visit the Dali Museum
  • Explore Barcelona on your own

Travelers wishing to earn academic credit for the Barcelona trip can combine it with NHTI's three credit, Elementary Spanish II course (FL 112).

For more information about NHTI’s Spring Adventure in Barcelona can contact Prof. Kris Lucas at or visit www.nhti.edu/travelstudy-abroad-barcelona.

A student learns to program an industrial robot under the watchful eye of Prof. Robert Arredondo, head of NHTI’s Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering departments.

Program Prepares Students for Advanced Manufacturing Jobs

CONCORD — Starting this fall, NHTI, Concord’s Community College, will begin offering a new 2-year Associate’s Degree in Robotics and Automation Engineering Technology (RAET).

Manufacturing is coming back strong using robotics and automation.  As a result, low skilled workers are being replaced by high skilled technicians and engineers.  Building upon NHTI’s long standing reputation in engineering technology education, the new RAET program has been carefully constructed with the assistance of industry partners to provide students the skills and knowledge to qualify for these high paying careers.

Joining NHTI’s prestigious staff is Program Coordinator and Professor Joe Cunningham.  He brings a long career of industry experience and engineering education, along with involvement as a Master Teacher with the national Project Lead The Way engineering program, and many years in FIRST and VEX robotics.  Professor Cunningham is also a co-founder of NH TechFest.

Students in the RAET program will master engineering fundamentals by taking courses in engineering design, manufacturing processes, computer programming, circuit theory, and digital electronics.  Emphasis is also placed on the study of mathematics and physical science, while English and social science courses broaden and improve the student’s communication skills.

A series of more advanced/specialized courses focuses on the integration of new and existing technologies and their application to product design and fabrication.  Topics include robotics, machine vision, process automation, programmable logic controllers, motion control, and the use of computers for design and manufacture.

The program is designed to prepare engineering technologists for employment in advanced manufacturing.  Positions such as electro mechanical technician have an average salary of $54k/year with a great employment outlook.  Graduates will also have the foundation necessary to pursue a bachelor’s degree, and to take advantage of opportunities for life-long learning and professional development.

This program is sponsored by (or in part by) a $19.97 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration TAACCCT Grant #TC-22504-ll-60-A-33, awarded to the New Hampshire Community College System in 2011.  This grant is helping to build capacity in the state’s hi-tech manufacturing sector by advancing the skills of students to meet workforce demands.

NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is a fully accredited, public community college serving students, businesses and the community by providing excellent academic, technical and professional education.  NHTI offers 66 academic programs to more than 4,500 students.  NHTI is a member of the Community College System of New Hampshire.  CCSNH is an equal opportunity employer and educator, and adaptive equipment is available upon request to students with disabilities.

NHTI Holds Line on Tuition

CONCORD — Tuition at NHTI will not rise this fall, in a decision reached by the Community College System of NH (CCSNH) Board of Trustees.  This is the fourth year since 2006 that NHTI and the State’s other six community colleges have held firm on tuition costs.  The decision comes in response to the legislature’s passage of a two-year budget which restores approximately $6 million of funding cut from the community college system budget during the previous biennium, including $2 million from the NHTI budget.

With tuition at New Hampshire community colleges already among the highest in the country, and state scholarship funding cut in the last State budget, System Chancellor Ross Gittell says that keeping rates from rising still higher is crucial.  “Our focus is on affordability and accessibility for students to higher education and advanced economic opportunities,” he said.  “It helps students and their families, and it also helps New Hampshire employment and the economy.”

“This is good news for our students,” says NHTI President Lynn Kilchenstein.  “The cost of education is already a significant obstacle for many of our students.  Freezing tuition for another year will make education more accessible for many students who struggle to make ends meet and who, more often than not, work part-time, or even full time, while pursuing their academic goals.”

Kilchenstein added that the tuition freeze also helps New Hampshire maintain its competitive economic edge. “Our business partners tell us that they are able to remain in New Hampshire because of NHTI’s highly skilled computer and engineering technology graduates,” she says.  “Our graduates offer their considerable talents throughout the State in a wide variety of fields, holding positions of responsibility at work and in community service.  If higher education becomes unaffordable, the State will lose the benefit of what these bright, creative people can bring to the community.  We need to hold tuition level in order to keep the door open for our local people, and for our businesses and industries to have a pool of skilled people from which to draw.”

In-state tuition at the state’s community colleges will remain at $210 per credit, or $630 for a 3-credit course.  Annually, a community college student will pay $5,040 in tuition for a minimum full-time course load.  Room and board at NHTI, which is the only college in the CCSNH with residence halls, will increase 3% due to the rising cost of food.  Community college courses offered in high schools through the Running Start program, for dual high school and college credit, will remain $150 per course.

Tuition for the New England Regional Student Program remains $315 per credit, and out-of-state tuition remains $478 per credit.

Program Preps Students for Careers in Industrial Automation

CONCORD — NHTI, Concord’s Community College, is pleased to welcome Joe Cunningham as Professor and Program Coordinator of the college’s new Associate Degree program in Robotics and Automation Engineering Technology (RAET).  Joe brings many years of industrial experience to the position, with companies such as Sevcon, Raytheon, and most recently Speedline Technologies.

Prior to coming to NHTI, Joe was a teacher at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH, where he was deeply involved in the Project Lead the Way Program, a pathway to engineering program which enables high school students to take college-level engineering courses for college credit.  As a Project Lead the Way Master Teacher, Joe helped educate and prepare other teachers to offer courses in the program.  He was also the advisor to Pinkerton’s FIRST Robotics and VEX Robotics competition teams, the latter of which went to the VEX World Championships for the past two years in a row.

Joe is also a co-founder of NH Tech Fest, an annual event in October which seeks to interest middle school and younger high school students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers.  Set up like a trade show, the festival features exhibits from a wide range of businesses and schools, and draws around 700 students every year.

Over the past two decades, New Hampshire’s manufacturing economy has been moving away from manual mill work toward automated, “smart” manufacturing.  This means there are fewer traditional low-wage factory jobs, but more higher-paying jobs for skilled workers.  NHTI’s new RAET program is specifically designed to prepare students for employment in advanced manufacturing.

NHTI’s RAET program has benefited by a $19.97 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (Employment & Training Administration TAACCCT Grant #TC-22504-ll-60-A-33) awarded to CCSNH.  The grant helped NHTI fund a brand-new, state-of-the-art robotics lab and upgrade the equipment in the CNC lab. Joe is confident that NHTI can offer students the best preparation for work in today’s automated manufacturing environment.

“We are the flagship engineering program in the state,” he says.  “NHTI has been an engineering school since our founding in 1965.  The RAET program draws on the richness of our base program to teach the fundamentals, while adding more advanced topics like robotics, machine vision and process automation.  We have a brand-new, state-of-the-art robotics lab.  We have industry partners telling us exactly what kind of training our students should have.  We are offering a full Associate degree, and we are working on connections with UNH and other schools, so that students who want to go on for a Bachelor’s degree will be able to do so seamlessly.

“Add to that our low prices, small class sizes, and individualized attention … why would anyone go anywhere else?”

Bonnie Farren teaching an NHTI-sponsored ceramics class at the Centennial Senior Center in Concord, Summer 2013.

CONCORD — On June 7, NHTI Visual Arts major Bonnie Farren of Concord became the first visual artist to receive an award from the Plan New Hampshire Scholarship and Fellowship Program.  She was recognized, along with fellow award recipients, at a dinner held in their honor at the Susan McLane Audubon Center in Concord, co-hosted by the NH chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Bonnie's winning proposal is an earth-works sculpture project that promotes direct human connection with the landscape by creating a seating center of softly rolling grass-covered mounds. "Sounds like a perfect project for the MacRury/Farnum corner of the NHTI Quad," says NHTI Visual Arts Deptartment Head Susan Haas.  "A small amphitheater, easily maintained with a mower, creating visual interest in an otherwise flat plane."

Plan New Hampshire is a membership organization of architects, landscape architects, engineers, planners, contractors, real estate and law professionals and others with an interest in the built environment.  Plan NH promotes sustainable planning, design and development by championing Smart Growth and Livability principles, as well as social responsibility and collaborative/cooperative efforts. The Scholarship and Fellowship Program recognizes outstanding students who call New Hampshire home, and who are studying a field that supports the organization's mission.  The program is sponsored in part by the NH Charitable Foundation.

Quonquer the Quad!

Team fitness challenge to benefit scholarship fund

CONCORD — On Sunday September 22, 2013, NHTI, Concord’s Community College will hold its first “Quonquer the Quad” team fitness challenge to raise funds for the Jennifer Kemp Memorial Scholarship.  The course, designed by Eric Marsh of Fun Intelligent Training, is comprised of numerous events created to give your body and mind a full work out, while testing your will and determination.

Tasks will range anywhere from a rope climb and tire flip, to balance beams and barrel rolls.  It will also mix in some mental puzzles along the way to give your brain a cramp as well.  Starting and ending in the NHTI quad, the challenge will take you around the NHTI campus and is sure to stretch your legs.

Teams are comprised of four people (age 18+), and each team must include at least one female member.  Registration is $20 per person prior to Sept 7, $25 thereafter.  Team check-in starts at 8 am Sunday morning, and the first team will begin the course at 9 am.

While this is definitely a race, and only the top 3 teams will receive prizes, the main goal of the event is to have fun and promote a healthy lifestyle.  So if you want to get creative with your workout routine, challenge yourself with a group of friends, or are just trying to get off the couch, ask yourself: Can you “Quonquer the Quad”?

The Jen Kemp scholarship is named in memory of a graduate of NHTI’s Sports Management program who passed away unexpectedly in 2004.  The scholarship distributes a minimum of three $500 awards each semester to qualified students who demonstrate strong academic skills and leadership potential, while also being active in campus life and community service at NHTI.  Since its inception, over $10,000 has been awarded to deserving NHTI students helping to make a difference.

The Practical Nursing program offers a one year (spring, summer, and fall semester) curriculum which combines classroom and clinical instruction, preparing students to work as entry level members of a multidisciplinary team providing care in a variety of health care settings.

Graduates are eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN® Exam).  Over the past three years, over 95% of NHTI’s Practical Nursing students have passed the NCLEX on their first try, consistently above the national and New Hampshire averages.

Graduates of the Practical Nursing program may also apply to continue their studies through NHTI’s LPN-RN Completion Option and obtain an Associate Degree.  Upon completion of this one year (summer, fall, and spring semester) program, students are eligible to apply for Registered Nurse Licensure.

CONCORD — This fall, NHTI, brought 60 new and returning student athletes to the school a few days early for its first ever STARTERS Leadership program – a two-day training intensive designed to encourage leadership qualities in and also help the new students prepare for college life.  Twenty-five NHTI faculty and staff mentors also volunteered to be part of the program.  Each student-athlete was assigned a mentor, and mentors will continue to have both formal and informal connections with their students throughout the year.

The program included sessions on team-building, civility, goal setting, influence and communication led by Dana and Deb Hult of Core Trainings of Nashua, NH.  The students also took a workshop on academics with NHTI Business Department Head Marty Hunt, and one on financial assistance with Financial Aid Director Sheri Gonthier and Bursar Jess Bryan.

The STARTERS program is a collaborative effort between the Student Leadership Team and the Athletic Department at NHTI.  Sport teams represented at the training included Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s Baseball, Women’s Softball and Volleyball, Co-Ed Golf, Men’s & Women’s Cross-Country, Men’s Basketball, and the Spirit Team.

“The STARTERS Leadership program was a huge success for our student-athletes working together for two wonderful days of training and workshops,” said Athletic Director Paul Hogan.  “Our athletic department feels the STARTERS program will become a cornerstone for the future success of the NHTI teams both on and off the competitive field of play.”

A STARTERS program is already being planned for Summer 2014 summer by the committee formulated to begin the next steps of the program, expanding the offerings and services provided for the NHTI athletic community.  In addition, “we plan to offer some ‘spinoff programs’ for our fall athletes who were not able to attend our first STARTERS program,” says an enthusiastic Hogan. “The plans and timing of the STARTERS program to be scheduled late August 2014 should help bridge the gap for our teams and athletes.”
